FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head women's basketball coach Jaime White announced Monday that guard Shauqunna Collins out of Garden City Community College has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Bulldogs.
"At the point guard spot, she has an ability to distribute the ball at any level," White said of Collins. "She can score in multiple ways and I think brings a presence as a leader."
Collins was a second-team All-KJCCC West point guard this last season at Garden City, helping lead the Lady Busters to the Region VI NJCAA semifinals for the second-straight season. She also received second-team Region VI accolades in 2013-14.
"Shauqunna is a point guard in every sense of the word," Garden City head coach Nick Salazar said. "She is extremely quick with the ball in her hands, she attacks the rim relentlessly and has the ability to get in and finish. She is one of the strongest finishers that I have had the pleasure of working with."
In the Region VI NJCAA semifinal loss to third-ranked Hutchinson, Collins scored 28 points, had four rebounds and three assists. The Lady Busters ended their season with an 18-14 record in 2013-14.
"I think one of the things that is overlooked with Shauqunna is that she rebounds the ball exceptionally well," Salazar added. "On many occasions she got in amongst the trees, got the rebound, got the ball up the floor and either took it coast-to-coast or delivered it out. Her ability in the open court is tremendous, as is her ability to get by defenders to attack the rim or set up teammates."
The 5-4 native of Saginaw, Mich. averaged 14.8 points per game on 43.7 percent shooting, 6.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists at the point guard spot this past season as a sophomore. She was named the Garden City Female Athlete of the Year on May 7, 2014.
As a freshman in 2012-13, Collins averaged 13.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 3.7 steals per game at Jackson Community College in Michigan. She graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw.
