FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's basketball student-athlete Alex Sheedy has been named to the Jayco Emerging Australian Opals Team that will take part in a four-nation tournament in China, June 15-27.
The Emerging Opals team, that sports an average age of less than 22 years-old, will face an emerging China team, Hungary's and the USA's World University Games teams. Making the Emerging Australian team is Sheedy's first step in the journey towards making her native country's team that is preparing to compete in the 2014 FIBA Women's World Basketball Championships being held in Turkey.
"This is a really great opportunity, and it came as a total surprise," Sheedy said. "I'm really excited and honored to be able to have a chance to play for my country and I hope that it turns out for the best."
The 12-member team features three other Australian's also playing NCAA Division I basketball. Joining Sheedy on the team are Saint Mary's Kate Gaze and South Dakota's Nicole Seekamp.
"Alex has completely committed herself to evolving and improving her game," head coach Raegan Pebley said. "She is truly willing to work on her weaknesses while still staying confident in her strengths. Alex is a blast to coach because of this and we are happy for her to experience reaching a personal goal.
"Our Aussies have so much pride in their country and Basketball Australia, so I know this is an opportunity she feels humbled and honored by."
Sheedy is coming off a strong sophomore campaign for the Bulldogs and was a third-team All-Mountain West selection last season when she averaged 10.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
She played some of her best basketball towards the end of the season and helped Fresno State win the 2013 Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championships. Sheedy was named to the All-Tournament team and scored a career-high 21 points in the championship game of the conference tournament to help Fresno State knock off top-seeded San Diego State and secure the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
In two seasons at Fresno State, Sheedy has played in all 67 Fresno State games and made 63 starts. She has averaged 8.5 points per game, scoring 569 total points, and 4.8 rebounds.
