Alex Sheedy Blog from China: Entry 4
June 26, 2013
JIANGSU, China - Fresno State women's basketball player Alex Sheedy is in China playing in a four-nation tournament for the Emerging Opals Australian Basketball team.
The tournament runs June 15-27 and Sheedy is keeping Bulldog fans updated with her progress as the tournament progresses with this blog right here on GoBulldogs.com. Sheedy and her team has completed two-thirds of the tournament and now heads to the Jiangsu province ahead of the closing three games of their tour. Here is her fourth blog from her trip.
So the second tournament is finished, only three more games to go. This tournament was a learning experience for our team. We played hard and good the first two games, but unfortunately we were unable to get that "W" against China and the USA. We played hard, we played together and we improved so they were not bad losses.
Our last game against Hungary though, that was not a good loss. We dropped the ball on that game a little. Not only could we not make a shot, we just didn't play together. But, each game is a chance to learn and we know now what we need to do to get the win.
At the moment, we are in the airport waiting for our flight to Pu Dong for our next round of games. It was a really early start, 5 a.m. wake up for a 5:30 departure to the airport. Almost everyone is getting coffee right now, but I don't want any, I want to sleep on the plane. Anyway, it's expensive in airports and I want to have some money for shopping.
A few of our players have some injuries that held them out of the last round of games, which is really unfortunate for them. But I am hoping that they recover really quickly and are all good to go for the World Uni Games in a week or so. This tour of China is a preparation tour for the girls who are on the squad for the World Uni Games. Half the squad and the reserves is on the Emerging Opals squad, and the other half is on the Opals squad, who played a three game tour against the Chinese Olympic team this week.
The World Uni Games is in Russia this year, and luckily I am just a reserve because I am on a later flight back to Australia after this tour and so I would have to get home, pack for Russia and leave within 24 hours! I'd say that's a fairly quick turnaround. In any case, it would be amazing to play over in Russia, but the team they have selected is amazing and I think they will do really well.
So, with this tour there has been a slight change of plans in my dates to return back to America. I was originally coming back on June 30, but I get back from China on the 29th so I won't be back until sometime in July, before my next summer school session. I am really excited to get to see all the girls on my team again, I have missed them so much! I have also missed the sun, but not the heat of Fresno. It is pretty intense, and I am happy not to have to pay my PG&E bill for the air conditioner a little longer!
There is only going to be one more short entry after this one, just one more for the way home and the end of the tour. But it has been fun writing about my Chinese excursion and I hope you all enjoyed my blog!
