Bulldog Women Open Practice
Oct. 17, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - There is nothing Adrian Wiggins loves more than the first day of practice. It's a time where he and his staff can teach and build their game plan for the upcoming season. Wiggins and his 2008-09 team officially opened practice on Friday at the North Gym.
"It's a fun time of year as coaches," Wiggins said. "We really enjoy the practice time. The players enjoy the games a little more but practices are like games for the coaches."
Last year the Bulldogs won the regular season WAC title, WAC tournament title and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in the program's 43 year history. This year the Bulldogs were picked second in the WAC behind Boise State.
While last year was exciting this year's team is looking forward to the future.
"I am looking forward to what is going to happen next," sophomore guard Jaleesa Ross said. "We are trying to do that and more this year."
The Bulldogs have a solid core of returning players led by Ross and Hayley Munro. Both players were named to the Preseason All-WAC team. Last year Ross earned Second Team All-WAC honors and was named the WAC Tournament MVP while averaging 12.8 points a game. Munro was named to the WAC All-Freshman team.
Also returning to the team is Bailey Amundsen, Brittny Jones, LaShaunte Stephens, Marnique Arnold, Taja Edwards and Emma Andrews. After sitting out last year due to NCAA transfer rules, Joh-Teena Filipe and LaShay Fears will see their first action in a Bulldog uniform. Freshman Kayla Sanders and junior college transfer Ashley Walker will also see their first action in a Bulldog uniform.
