Bulldogs Battle Charlotte Tough

Dallas, Tx.The Fresno State women's basketball team battled a tough Charlotte 49ers team tough but lost 70-69 on Friday night in the opening game of the SMU Hoops For The Cure Tournament at Moody Coliseum.
Fresno State trailed 67-66 with less than 20 seconds left in the game and had a chance to win the game but Ross had an open look inside the key that rolled around the rim and out with eight seconds left in the game. Charlotte then converted its free throws at the end of the game to seal the win.
The Bulldogs had four players in double figures led by 14 from Jaleesa Ross and LaShay Fears. Fears' 14 points was a career-high. Ashley Walker had a career-best 11 points while Hayley Munro added 10 points.
The Bulldogs shot 41 percent from the field while holding Charlotte to 36 percent. The Bulldogs also out rebounded the 49ers 49-42 thanks to a career-best 12 from Marnique Arnold. Bailey Amundsen, Taja Edwards and Ross each had six rebounds.
The game was nip-and-tuck all evening as there was seven ties and nine lead changes.
The Dogs did lead the entire first half and by as many as 10 points at 22-12 with 5:17 left until the break after two free throws by LaToya Brown. Charlotte made a late run to get within four at 28-24 at halftime.
Charlotte took its first lead of the game at 31-30 at the 18:20 mark of the second half. Each team exchanged leads during the next 10 minutes. The sixth tie of the game came with 10:29 to play at 51-51 thanks to a layup by Fears.
The 49ers led 59-55 with six minutes remaining but the Bulldogs came back and took a 60-59 lead two minutes later after a 3-pointer by Fears and a layup by Ross. Charlotte then retook the lead at 61-60 and later led 67-66 following a layup by Munro with 1:19 to play.
The Bulldogs play at 3 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday against the loser of the SMU/Sam Houston State game.
