FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State earned the title "Best in the West" Sunday at the Student Horse Center as they defeated the University of Tennessee Martin (8-7) and Texas Christian University (9-7) from day one's competition. TCU finished in second with one win over UTM who came in third.
"I'm so proud of each and every ride our ladies put down this weekend," said Western Head Coach Stephanie Reeves. "The teams we hosted offered up good competition, but we took everything we have been working on and put it to work which brought us great results! Behind the scenes was a great amount of teamwork taking place which was great to see as well."
On day one of Best in the West the Bulldogs competed against UTM in Reining and Equitation over Fences, and day two they finished their head-to-head matchup with Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship.
On the Flat, junior Lauren Carr (83) was the only Bulldog to earn her point as the 'Dogs fell to UTM, 3-1 with a raw score total of 311-310.
In Horsemanship Fresno State won three points with Christa Beezley winning the MVP honor (75.5). Rio Haack (69) and Lauren Crivelli (73.5) also picked up wins for the Bulldogs as Allie Warkentin tied UTMs Heidi Grimm with a 69.5.
"This weekend was a great opportunity to show the depth of our team at home on our own horses against TCU and UTM," said English Head Coach Julia Scrivani. "Both the teams attending this event are strong competitors that exhibit great sportsmanship. We had a few difficult rides however as a team we overcame them by coming together and refocusing toward riding our best."
TCU and UTM went head-to-head on Sunday in all four equestrian events, where TCU earned the team victory, 9-7. Four TCU riders were earned all four available MVP honors in the matchup.
This was the sixth annual Best in the West tournament and it was the fifth time Fresno State has won. In 2011, Fresno State finished second, but returned this year to retake the "Best in the West" title.
The Bulldogs will now prepare for their trip to Atlanta, Ga. to compete against the University of Georgia and Baylor on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25-26.
