FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State equestrian Western team defeated New Mexico State (6-2) in the first round of the 2012 NCEA National Championships as the English team fell top ranked Texas A&M (6-2).
In the Western arena, the Bulldogs delivered a solid team performance in Reining defeating the New Mexico State Aggies 4-0. Lauren Crivelli (133), Ciara Kozlowski (133.5), Sydney Coletti (128) and Sonya Koch (139) all earned their points in the first round.
In Horsemanship, Crivelli picked up her second win of the day scoring a team high western score of 142. Christa Beezley also earned her point in the event with the score of 141. The Bulldogs tied the Aggies 2-2 in Horsemanship, and defeated them 6-2 overall.
Jumping over in the English arena, Chelsie Stone was the only Bulldog to earn her point in Equitation over Fences. She scored a 139 defeating her opponent by almost 20 points. In Equitation on the Flat, freshman NCEA All-American Macy Wilson recorded a team-high score of 153 making her the only 'Dog to earn her point in the event.
In the English saddle, the Bulldogs went into the National Championships ranked 10th and competed against Texas A&M who was ranked seventh. In the Western saddle, Fresno State was ranked eighth and defeated the ninth ranked team New Mexico State. The Western team moved onto the second round and competed against the number one Western seed Texas A&M.
The Bulldogs fell to Texas A&M in the second round 8-0 with a raw score total 1111.0-1063.7. Crivelli and Beezley recorded the highest scores in the second round each earning a 140.5.
Competition resumes tomorrow as the 2012 NCEA National Championships continue with Day 2 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas.
