FRESNO, Calif. -- The `Dogs opened their season Friday afternoon against No. 3 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., falling to the Gamecocks 17-3.

"We had some very strong rides and rode mistake-free," head coach Collins Daye said. "I'm proud that we rode so well against such a strong team."

The action started in the arena with Equitation on the Flat where junior Macy Wilson earned the team's only point. Wilson scored a 67, beating her opponent's score of 52. Although senior Hannah Flammang lost the point, she earned Fresno State's highest score with a 68.

The Bulldogs earned another point in Equitation Over Fences. Senior Dayle Fischer defeated her opponent with a score of 83, the highest score of the event.

The `Dogs fell to the Gamecocks 8 to 2 in the Hunt Seat.

On the Western side, Fresno State did not win a match in the Horsemanship category.

"We were one point off here, one there," Daye said. "Overall our Western team did really well, though."

Freshman Taylor Brown earned the team's only Western point in Reining, defeating her opponent 71.5 to 68. Brown earned the Fresno State MVP title in her first match as a Bulldog.

"It was fantastic," Daye said. "She rode well and had a super great first time out."

Overall, Fresno State fell to the Gamecocks 1,499 to 1,343.

The `Dogs travel to No. 2 Auburn Saturday to take on the Tigers.

"I am super happy with where we are at heading into Auburn," Daye said.
