The Fresno State equestrian team heads to the south for a weekend competition against Baylor and the University of Georgia.

FRESNO, Calif. -
The Fresno State Equestrian team travels to Atlanta, Ga. this weekend to compete against
No. 4 Baylor and the No. 2 University of Georgia, in their first away competition of the spring
season. The Fresno State Bulldogs (7-4) are coming off a big win at "Best in the West,"
and will prepare this week to compete against two of the top ranked teams in the nation.
Fresno State equestrian won the sixth annual Best in the West Invitational Saturday
and Sunday, Feb. 18-19, 2012.
The Bulldogs (7-4) went undefeated at home during the fall season.
Kimberly HewsonBudnik leads the team with the most MVP honors earned (5).
Lauren Crivelli leads the team with the most wins this season (13).
Fresno State was ranked in the top 10 National Coaches' Poll three times during the
Collegiate equestrian is now governed by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.
Bulldogs Earn "Best in the West" Title
Fresno State earned the title "Best in the West" Sunday at the Student Horse Center as they
defeated the University of Tennessee Martin (8-7) and Texas Christian University (9-7) from
day one's competition. TCU finished in second with one win over UTM who came in third.
This was the sixth annual Best in the West tournament and it was the fifth time Fresno
State has won. In 2011, Fresno State finished second, but returned this year to retake
the "Best in the West" title.
West Finishes In Top 8
'Dogs Show Well At Scrimmage
Sophomore Hillary West was one of 16 riders to compete at the Annual Collegiate Equitation
Challenge on Friday, Feb. 10 in Willington, Fla. She defeated her opponent in
the first round of Equitation over Fences with a score of 66, moving her to the finals that
evening. She scored a 62 in the final round, falling just short in her match up. Kimberly
HewsonBudnik was one of four riders to be invited by the NCEA to compete at the WEF
in Equitation on the Flat. She scored a 135 in the first ever Flat competition for this event.
The equestrian team kicked off the year with a Red vs. Blue team scrimmage at the
Fresno State Student Horse Center on Saturday, Jan. 28. The scrimmage ended in a tie
(11-11) with the Blue team taking the Hunter Seat events (7-3) and the Red team taking
the Western events (8-4). Sophomore Hillary West
, a member of the Blue team, picked
up two MVP honors at the scrimmage for her solid performances in Equitation on the Flat
(75) and Equitation over Fences (83). Katelyn Haynes
was the MVP in Horsemanship (75)
and Sydney Coletti
was named MVP in Reining (72).
Collegiate Equestrian Makes Progress
In an effort to further advance equestrian to a NCAA championship sport, the entity formally
known as Varsity Equestrian has established a new association to become the voice for the
sport of equestrian within college athletics. The National Collegiate Equestrian Association
(NCEA) was founded to be the catalyst for growth of varsity level equestrian competition.
