FRESNO, Calif.--The Fresno State equestrian team heads to Brookings, S.D. this weekend as the No. 1 seed for the Independent Championship against University of Tennessee-Martin, Delaware State and South Dakota State University.

The Bulldogs enter the championship as the nation's eighth-ranked team. UT-Martin, the second seed for the competition, has been a part of the NCEA rankings throughout the season. Delaware State takes the third seed, and South Dakota State University is the fourth seed at home.

"It is exciting being the No. 1 seed, but we still have to be on our game as South Dakota State is competing at home," interim head coach Eric Hubbard said. "We cannot give any points away through mistakes, and we must lay the best patterns that we can."

Hubbard said the team has been working really hard for the championship.

"The girls have been working on increasing their confidence after coming off of two huge wins at home," he said. "We have to keep that momentum going with us."

Hubbard is expecting solid, consistent rides from the team.

"I am looking forward to good competition with a positive outcome that will set us up well for Nationals next month," he said.

The Independent Championships will begin at 9 a.m. CT on Friday and Saturday in Brookings, S.D.

After the Independent Championship, Nationals will be held on April 17-19 in Waco, Texas.
