Luethke Leads `Dogs at Spartan Invite

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State finished ninth out of 15 teams at the Spartan Invitational women's golf tournament at the Almaden Country Club. The Bulldogs posted a 932 team total on the par 72, 6,179-yard course.
"Our team scores improved each round which was positive but we've still got some work to do," said head coach Angie Cates. "We have a few days to prepare for UNLV, we are going to work hard and focus on putting together 3 good rounds in Vegas."
California, ninth nationally, overtook second-round leader San Jose State with a 301 team score to finish first with an 899 total. UC Irvine was third in the 15-team field with a 906. Washington at 911 and San Francisco at 912 rounded out the top five teams.
Laura Luethke was the top Fresno State finisher tying for 19th place at 229. Luethke fired a third round of 75 to move up. Taylor Siebert trailed closely behind tying for 22nd place with 230. Hali Coppin had the best round of the day for the Bulldogs posting a 72 to tie for 33rd place with 233 overall. Pia Escandon tied for 60th place with 245 and Tiffany Derksen tied for 63rd with 249 to round out the Bulldog line-up. "Hali had a great round today," said Cates. "We knew it was just a matter of time before she could put it all together, we're really happy for her it."
UC Irvine's Selanee' Henderson successfully defended her 2007 Spartan Invitational title with a final round 75 for a 218 total. Henderson is the Spartan Invitational's first two-time winner of the tournament that dates back to 1983. California teammates Pia Halbig and Allison Goodman tied for second at 220.
The Bulldogs will continue on the road as they head to the UNLV Spring Invitational March 10-12.
