RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- In claiming her first collegiate career title, freshman Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttirwon the Mountain West Championship.
Competing in a field of 45-players, the freshman took first place at two-over par, 218 (71-71-76). The freshman made 10 birdies and recorded her best finish of the season.
"I am really happy to win this tournament and it is a great finish for this season," Björgvinsdóttir said. "Overall, I am happy with this tournament and I am so excited to start our next season."
Björgvinsdóttir's finish is the women's golf program's first MW championship. The last Bulldog to win a conference championship was Hali Coppinin 2010 under the WAC.
The Bulldogs concluded the 2013-14 season with a tie for third place. The 'Dogs fired 45-over par, 909 (296-296-317).
"We are really thrilled about our week here," head coach Emily Milbergersaid. "We had a great week here at Dinah Shore with a tough stretch coming in on the third round with some challenging conditions. We had a couple tough finishing holes but we really hung in there. We are really thrilled for Gudrun as she won the individual title in her first trip to Dinah Shore."
Among the top-ten was junior Madchen Ly. Ly finished in sixth place at six-over par, 222 (71-71-80). Among the top-25 was sophomore Hannah Sodersten. Sodersten finished the tournament in a tie for 21st at 15-over par, 231 (77-77-77).
"We really made a statement this week of where our program is and were we are headed in the future and I couldn't be more proud of these ladies and what they have done this week and this season overall," Milberger said. "We ended this season on a lot of positive notes."
In making history again, Björgvinsdóttir and Ly were named to the All-Mountain West second team.
"Really exciting finish for both Gudrun and Madchen," Milberger said. "We are looking forward to what is ahead for them in the future!"
