FRESNO, Calif. -- In her third trial of representing her home country Iceland, Mountain West Champion Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir will compete in the European Ladies Team Championship, July 8-12.
"I am really excited to go to Slovenia and represent my home country in such a big tournament," Björgvinsdóttir said. "It is a great opportunity to see where you are at among the best players in Europe."
Björgvinsdóttir previously represented Iceland in the 2011 and 2013 European Ladies Team Championship.
The tournament is hosted by the Golf and Country Club Ljubljana in Slovenia. Among the field are 20 teams including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Wales.
The first two days of the tournament are stroke play where the best five of six scores count. Then, each team is divided into flights A, B, and C according to their previous score and the teams play match play against those in their given flight.
Since winning the Mountain West Championship in late April, Björgvinsdóttir has been working on improving her game and preparing for this competition, head coach Emily Milberger said.
"This is exciting and special honor for Gudrun and I really believe a well-deserved achievement for her," Milberger said. "I know she will be a strong representative for her home country of Iceland in this prestigious championship. I'm looking forward to following her successes on such a grand world stage."
Björgvinsdóttir took a swing at match play over the weekend while competing in the Icelandic National Match Play Championships, June 27-29, where she finished five matches to take third place.
