FRESNO, Calif. -- For Iceland native Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir the opportunity to represent her home country in the 2014 European Ladies Team Championship was worth more than any potential outcome.
"It is always a great honor to represent your country in a big tournament like this," Björgvinsdóttir said.
The annual tournament was hosted by the Golf and Country Club in Ljubljana, Slovenia on July 8-12. This was Björgvinsdóttir's third time competing in the tournament as a member of the Iceland team.
"I had a great time and good experience in Slovenia these last couple of days," Björgvinsdóttir said. "We had good and bad weather, the course was in great shape, and the whole tournament was well organized."
The tournament is divided into two parts - stroke play and match play. The first two days of the tournament are stroke play where the best five of six scores count. Then, each team is divided into flights A, B, and C according to their previous score and the teams play match play against those in their given flight.
Individually, the Bulldog star carded seven-over par, 149 (75-74) to record a tie for 60th place. As a team, Iceland fired 22-over par, 732 (366-366) to card 11th place in stroke play. This finish placed Iceland in Flight B as they entered match play.
Competing as a team, Iceland fell 3-2 to Wales in the quarterfinals, dropped a 3-2 match to Netherlands in the semifinals, and came up short 3.50-1.50 to Austria in the final round. Overall, Iceland recorded a 16th place finish in the 2014 European Ladies Team Championship.
"The team played really well the first two days and made it into Flight B," Björgvinsdóttir said. "We played against good countries and each match was really exciting. Personally I played really good golf against really hard opponents. Overall it was a great week for me and my team."
Among the field were 20 countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and Wales.
Looking forward to next year, Björgvinsdóttir hopes to compete again in the annual tournament.
"I really hope to make the team next year," Björgvinsdóttir said. "This is one of the most fun tournaments of the summer."
