Aug. 25, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - A first time visit to the Golfweek Conference Challenge and home tournament highlights the Fresno State women's golf 2009-10 schedule, announced Tuesday by head coach Angie Cates-Moore. The `Dogs will open the season at the first-ever Golfweek Conference Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. hosted by Golfweek from September 13-15. The event will be held at the Primm Valley Casino Resorts Desert Course. The Bulldogs will represent the Western Athletic Conference against top teams from conferences around the nation. "We are honored to be representing the WAC at this tournament," said head coach Angie Cates-Moore. "It's a great field and an important tournament for us. Golfweek came up with a great idea for this event having all the top conferences across the U.S. meet in Las Vegas to kick off their season." The conference Challenge will serve as a great opportunity to perform in front of Golfweek, which is important for ranking and strengthening the schedule. Teams competing, with their respective conference, include East Tennessee State (Atlantic 10), Oklahoma State (Big 12),Portland State (Big Sky), Coastal Carolina (Big South), Ohio State (Big Ten), UC-Irvine (Big West), Georgia State (Colonial), SMU (Conference USA), Harvard (Ivy League), Ball State (Mid-American), Drake (MVC), UNLV (Mountain West), Jacksonville State (Ohio valley), Cal (Pac 10), Chattanooga (Southern), Oral Roberts (Summit League), Fresno State (WAC) and Pepperdine (WCC). During the fall season, the Bulldogs will compete in four tournaments one of which is conference foe, New Mexico State's tournament. The Price's-New Mexico State Invitational will be held in Las Cruces, N.M., and wraps up the fall season. In the spring, Fresno State opens up in Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the 2010 Peg Bernard Invitational, hosted by Stanford. The `Dogs have only competed in this event twice with the most recent coming in the in the spring of 2007; where the Bulldogs finished ninth out of 13 teams.
After returning from Palo Alto, the Bulldogs will host the sixth annual Fresno State Lexus Invitational at Copper River Golf Course. Fresno State placed sixth in the event last season.
After the home event, the `Dogs will travel along the west coast from the bay area to southern California to prepare themselves for the 2010 WAC Championships, which will be held in Mesa, Ariz. The 2010 WAC Championships will be the premier event on the schedule as the `Dogs look to advance to the NCAA championship and add another championship to the program's repertoire. Last season the Bulldogs took third place after being named the 2008 WAC Champions. "I'm thrilled about the schedule this year," said Cates-Moore."This schedule will be a great test for us and very exciting for the team."
