FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's lacrosse team took to the field Saturday, facing off in a red vs. white scrimmage that included alumni from last year's inaugural team.
The red squad, made up entirely of current Bulldogs, took on four former `Dogs, the team's three assistant coaches and some of their own teammates in the final scrimmage in their final scrimmage before opening the season next week at La Salle on Friday in Philadelphia.
"Today was a great chance to get everyone out on the field and to prepare for our opener against La Salle next week," said lacrosse head coach Sue Behme.
Saturday's match ended in an 8-7 advantage for the white squad, bolstered by three goals by freshman Bulldog Amanda Cross, who would later score a fourth goal for the red squad. On the red squad, another newcomer Lauren Natale had two goals as well. Also finding the back of the net for the red squad were Sophie Walker, Paula Badali, Allie Zachariades and Amira Ferrell.
"This is just another chance to get ready and our team really took advantage of that opportunity today," said Behme.
People gravitated to the event as nearly 100 fans showed up for the scrimmage on the soccer and lacrosse field.
Molly Sovacool, a former Bulldog lacrosse player and current fan, scored two goals on the white squad.
"It was great to come out here and see how improved the team is now and how some of the team has stepped up into leadership roles," said Sovacool.
Andrea Alires, a former player who picked up a goal as well, agreed.
"This was really fun," said Alires. "It's great to see what the coaches have done with this team."
Behme was happy with the day's event and optimistic about the upcoming season.
"It was a great working experience for us to try out new schemes and see what is going to be best for us in the long run," she said. "Our team is excited to get started especially after getting out here with these scrimmages."
