FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head women's lacrosse coach Jessica Pausewang knew this day would come. And just three games into her career at Fresno State, Pausewang led the Bulldogs to the program's first win Saturday afternoon.
Fresno State led wire-to-wire in a day filled with sunshine and rain, and a couple of shamrocks, beating Long Island 17-12 at Bulldog Stadium.
"The team has been working so hard and they wanted to come out and show everyone how hard they have been working," Pausewang said. "I'm so excited, the support has been great, and I'm just so happy for everyone. They were focused from early on and it all paid off today."
As the final horn sounded, the Bulldogs rushed the field to celebrate the program's first win since starting in 2009. For seniors Kasandra Martinson and Callie Seidman, the win was especially satisfying after three years of hard work.
"It's an amazing feeling. This was a long time coming and we have worked so hard to get to this point," Seidman said. "We can't wait to build on this win."
Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs jumped in front one minute into the game, and never trailed from that point on. Sophomore Briana Hetherington led the way for Fresno State with four goals and freshman Holly Cisneros had three goals and one assist.
It was an all-around team effort Saturday, which included a great defensive performance, led by goalkeeper Katie Wilbur. Wilbur picked up the win, recording 13 saves in all 60 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs recorded 41 shots in the game, while holding Long Island to only 10 shots in the first half. Adding to the effort was sophomore Natalie Harrington, who had four points on three assists and one goal. Freshman Marcy Levatino came off the bench to add two goals and one assist.
The key stretch for Fresno State in the second half came when the Bulldogs outscored the Blackbirds 5-1 to start the final 30 minutes of play.
"I'm so happy to have our coaching staff, they have done great things with this team," Pausewang added.
"We Are Your Team!" - The Bulldogs travel down to take on the San Diego State Aztecs on March, 20 and return to Bulldog Stadium on March, 22 versus Central Connecticut.
