FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs lacrosse team fought hard to force overtime and double overtime against Howard with last second goals but the Bison ended up scoring in the second sudden-death period to pull out the 19-18 2OT victory.
The Bulldogs (0-13) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead within the first seven minutes but the Bison scored three unanswered goals at the end of the first half to tie the match at 7-7.
Howard (4-11) came out of halftime scoring seven of the first eight goals. The Dogs slowly chipped away at the deficit and suddenly found themselves down by one going into the final two minutes. With 20 seconds left, a shot by Kara Concheck found the back of the net to send the match into overtime at 16-16.
Fresno State scored first in overtime but Howard answered with two goals of its own. Concheck came up big again for the Dogs by firing a goal with 12 seconds left to knot up the match once again and force a second overtime.
Neither team scored in the first half of the sudden-death second overtime. With more than half of the second sudden-death period complete, Courtland Lackey of Howard put in the heartbreaking goal to give the Bison the 19-18 win.
After scoring a career-high three goals in her first match back from injury last Monday, Concheck, a freshman from Columbus, Ohio, repeated her performance with three more scores along with sophomore Lauren Natale.
Lisa Barnaba recorded nine saves in the first half and Katie Wilbur notched 12 saves in the second half and both overtimes.
Fresno State will conclude their season this Saturday, April 23 with a match against Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Penn. at 8:00 a.m. PT.
"We Are Your Team!" The Bulldogs return to action this Saturday, April 23 in Pittsburgh, Penn. to face Duquesne at 8:00 a.m. PT, marking the Dogs' final match of the season.
