Former Female Bulldog Student-Athletes To Be Honored
Jan. 24, 2012
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State is a university known for honoring its history and tradition and the athletics department is no different. Fresno State has a rich history of women's sports participation, even preceding the implementation of Title IX in 1972.
For the past three years, Fresno State Athletics has celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), a day that brings national attention to the achievements of female athletes of the past, present and future throughout the country, by honoring former female student-athletes and providing a free clinic for children.
This year in honor of NGWSD a combination of athletes and coaches from the 70s and 80s will reunite for a celebration of their athletic careers and achievements.
More than 60 former female Bulldogs will return to the Fresno State campus on Saturday, Jan. 28 to be honored at the women's basketball game at 7 p.m. During halftime current female student-athletes will present the former student-athletes with awards in recognition of their athletic efforts on behalf of Fresno State.
Prior to the basketball game the former Bulldogs will meet at the Smittcamp Alumni House for appetizers and a reception. The pre-game event enables the honorees to reminisce about what it was like to be student-athletes in the early years. It's a time to share stories, jokes and memories that impacted each person's life and reflect upon how their participation helped pave the way for today's enhanced student-athlete opportunities for women.
Additionally, as a part of the NGWSD festivities, the Fresno State athletics department will host a free sports clinic for children on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. Student-athletes from women's golf, swimming and diving, volleyball, women's tennis and soccer will teach participants a variety of skills from their respective sports.
"We Are Your Team!" -- The Fresno State athletics department will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Jan. 28. The celebration will coincide with the Bulldogs' women's basketball game against Hawai`i at 7 p.m. where the former Bulldogs will be honored during the halftime show.
