FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State lacrosse team took time out of its busy in-season schedule to visit its kindergarten pen pals on Tuesday afternoon at Herndon-Barstow Elementary School.

"It is important for us to continue the relationship with Mr. Anderson and his kindergarten class, writing notes back and forth and visiting the classroom has helped us form a great connection between each child and player," said Fresno State assistant lacrosse coach Julia Decker. "It is awesome for the children to have our student-athletes to look up to and have as role models. This is an experience that both the children and our student-athletes may remember for the rest of their lives."

The Bulldogs have been pen pals with Tim Anderson's kindergarten class for the past five years. In what has become a tradition in the program, they exchange holiday cards and good luck notes before games and try to make visits to the class when possible.

The Bulldogs take pride in giving back to the community and thoroughly enjoy their time spent with their pen pals.

"I have always enjoyed the pen pal experience," said senior Kara Concheck. "I love seeing the faces of the kids light up when we come in, and to see how much these children enjoy our company makes me very happy."

On Tuesday's visit, the lacrosse team read to the kindergarten class and then helped them write sentences for a worksheet that was assigned.

"Being pen pals with the Fresno State lacrosse team has been very beneficial for my class," said Mr. Anderson. "It has given the students a chance to use writing for an authentic purpose. It has also given them the motivation to learn their letters and sounds so they can write to their pen pals."

The value of service has become a part of culture of the lacrosse program, as the 'Dogs conclude their season they continue to support the community and give back to the Valley.
