Postcard from Spain: Week 1
June 5, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's lacrosse player Jennifer Smith is in Spain for five weeks with the study abroad program. Through out her stay she will be providing updates to Bulldog fans on how her trip is going.
Here is Journal Entry No. 1.
Hola Bulldog fans!
People do everything late here in Madrid. They go out late (until 4-7 in the a.m!)they eat dinner late (10 p.m. or later) and they wake up late especially on the weekends. The people work hard, but they definitely know how to let loose and have fun. I am thoroughly enjoying the afternoon siesta. Almost all shops close from 3:00-5-5:30. I am taking two Spanish classes at my University. It is about a 45 minute ride each way on the metro.
The public transportation system here is awesome. At first I was dreading the commute but there is something about the metro that calms me. There is so much commotion but at the same time it is very peaceful in my opinion.
I finally found a gym where I could buy a membership for one month so that I may continue training for lacrosse. Apparently lifting weights and working out is not common for Spanish women. I am usually the only girl which is a little intimidating, but it gives me an opportunity to speak more Spanish with the locals.
My home stay family is amazing. They have an 18 year old daughter and there are three other students living in the house with me. I feel very blessed to be here. They only speak Spanish to me which creates some confusion at times. Needless to say there are a lot of sound effects and hand gestures whenever there is a language barrier.
Well that´s all for now. I will be checking in again soon!
All my best!
