FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head lacrosse coach Jessica Pausewang announced the 2013 schedule on Thursday afternoon.
"I think this schedule is not only challenging but competitive," said Pausewang. "We look forward to improving our record from last year and working hard to qualify for MPSF conference playoffs."
The `Dogs open their 2013 season playing Presbyterian, on a neutral site at USC on Feb. 17. This will be third time the two teams have played in the program's five year existence, the first time in California.
The Bulldogs compete in their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Denver on March 9. While in the Mile High City, the `Dogs will also play Winthrop for the first-ever pairing between the two schools (Mar. 10).
Fresno State then returns home for its season opener, hosting conference opponent Oregon in Bulldog Stadium on March 16 at 1p.m.
After playing California at home on March 19, the Dogs' take a trip to the east coast to compete against Albany (Mar. 22), Stony Brook (Mar. 26), Manhattan (Mar. 29) and Colombia (Mar. 31).
"When we were looking at our 2013 schedule we wanted to be challenged since we have really accelerated this program last season. For us to go to New York and play Albany, Stony Brook, Manhattan and Columbia we will be playing top competition in each of their conferences," said Pausewang. "This will also open up our players to the east coast style of play and ultimately improve us for conference play. It is also nice going back east so the players who are from the east coast on our team get a chance to have more friends and family attend the games."
After their return to California, the Bulldogs finish their season in a string of conference play against Stanford (Apr. 2), San Diego State (Apr. 6), UC Davis (Apr. 13) and St. Mary's (Apr. 17).
The lacrosse team concludes the regular season at USC, who is newest addition to the MPSF on April 20.
"The addition this year of USC to our conference shows the growth of lacrosse out west," said Pausewang. "The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation now has an automatic qualifier for the conference tournament champion. I look forward to playing them and I know the team is proud of the recognition this sport is getting on the west coast."
Oregon hosts this year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament on May 3 & 5.
The `Dogs also compete in three scrimmages this fall, including one home match next weekend Oct. 20 against San Diego State University on the lacrosse/soccer field at 1p.m.
