FRESNO, Calif. --- The White squad topped the Red squad in Fresno State's Red and White Scrimmage Saturday evening at the Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
The game was played in two shortened halves of 25 and 30 minutes.
"This is the first time we played in a formal situation so we were expecting a little bit of a frantic play and that's what we got in the first half," said head coach Zwaschka. "It was expected as everyone was excited to get out here and play in front of their family and friends that were here. Once we were able to settle down, we saw some really nice play and the things that we've been working on."
Sophomore Emily Duff was the first to strike for the White with a goal from outside the 18-yard box less than 10 minutes into the first half, putting them ahead 1-0. The Red squad had several opportunities to score but were unable to capitalize upon them.
"I was really pleased once everyone finally settled down and and zeroed in on what we needed to do," said Zwaschka on the tempo of the game.
In the second half, the White team added two more goals to finish the game with a 3-0 win. Junior Morgan Castain put the ball in the back of the net with a solid shot in front of the goal less than eight minutes in to the second half. Five minutes later, junior Lauren Lindstrom joined in on the scoring with the final goal for the White team.
"I think that every single player showed good things and also things that we need to keep working on," said Zwaschka. "I hope that it just continues to build and we continue to get better."
The Bulldogs will come together as one team less than a week from today when they travel to defending National Champion Stanford on Aug. 10 for an exhibition match at 7:00 pm.
"We know that it is going to be a challenge there which is why we scheduled it," said Zwaschka on matchup with Stanford. "We want to make sure that we are playing against the best possible competition and that will give us a real barometer of where we are at."
