Goal Frenzied Finale Gives Bulldogs Win
Aug. 21, 2011
FRESNO, Calif. - The score was tied at zero for over 71 minutes before the Fresno State women's soccer team unleashed a flurry of goals, over a 12 minute span, to overtake the University of Texas at San Antonio Sunday morning, 4-0. Freshman Katie DeVaultearned her first collegiate shutout in the win.
"It was a very good win," said Head Coach Brian Zwaschka. "I'm really pleased with how hard everybody worked. Everyone contributed today."
Freshman Jaycee Binghamopened scoring for the Bulldogs with her first collegiate goal. The East Clovis High School standout, fired a shot from 30 yards out that crossed the goalie and found the right side of the net. She was assisted by senior Kendall VanDine and junior Callie Hancock.
Six minutes later, freshman Pernille Ingvaldsengave the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead, her first collegiate goal, on a pass from VanDine.
Nizzoli then assisted sophomore Kayla Kret on the final goal of the match. Kret headed in her first goal of the season on a corner only a minute after Nizzoli's.
VanDine and Hancock collectively accounted for four of the team's season-high six assists. Hancock and sophomore Tara Boynton combined for seven shots, three on goal, to lead Fresno State's assault on the Roadrunners goalkeepers.
"We needed our first goal to really settle us," said Zwaschka of the quick goals. "To have that flurry of goals at the end there got us back on track for how we know how to play. We really controlled it for the last twenty minutes. I'm excited that we finished so strongly."
Fresno State (1-1-0) outshot the Roadrunners 18-15 and earned more corners (4-1). Maria Jose Rojas led UTSA (0-2-0) with four shots, two on goal. Webb finished with a match-high five saves.
"I'm really thrilled that in two games," started Zwaschka, "we have six goals and six different goal scorers. This is a part of how we try to play so we're not predictable. We're really pleased with the trip overall."
The 'Dogs return home Friday, Aug. 26 to face the University of San Francisco at 7 p.m. in the home opener. They will be the first team to host a competition on the brand new FieldTurf Revolution surface in Bulldog Stadium.
