Bulldogs Lead at Half But Still Fall in Final Exhibition Match
Aug. 25, 2007
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead at halftime in its final exhibition game but it wasn't enough as Cal Poly scored two goals in the final 35 minutes of the second half to earn the 2-1 victory.
Despite the exhibition loss, Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe was pleased with his teams' effort on the field.
"We scored an early goal which was great," he said. "There were some times we had some lapses but overall the effort in which we played and how hard we played was good. I am happy with that. I am happy with how we battled after we gave up a late goal. We didn't put our heads down. We were aggressive in trying to get the equalizer"
For the game Cal Poly out shot the Bulldogs 17-9. Lauren Satterlee had three shot attempts while Ali Sill had two.
It was Sill who put Fresno State on the scoreboard early as she put a ball in the top right corner of the net on a 35-yard shot from the left side of the field in the 11th minute. Sill's goal was one of two shot on goal attempts the Bulldogs had.
Kaity Revel had a solid first half in goal as she made three saves, all coming early in the game.
In the second half, Cal Poly's Ashley Vallis tied the game at 1-1 when she dribbled past several Fresno State defenders and put the ball in goal on a shot taken from inside the box.
Whitney Sister then gave the Mustangs the lead when she put back a missed attempted in the 84th minute.
After the goal, The Bulldogs pressed offensively and had the ball on their side of the field for the final six minutes but were unable to score.
"Anytime you have a lead you hope to keep it," Springthorpe said. "We broke down defensively in the second half in a couple of areas that cost us but again it was a great atmosphere here."
