Women's Soccer Falls To UC Riverside, 4-0
Aug. 27, 2004
RIVERSIDE, Calif.- UC Riverside scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over Fresno State on Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
The Highlanders (1-0-0) held an 11-8 advantage in shots, although the Bulldogs (0-1-0) owned a 6-5 edge during the opening period. Amanda Reyes (Newhall, Calif.), one of five Bulldog freshmen in the starting lineup, attempted two shots and was one of seven different players to do so. In all, nine freshmen made their collegiate debut in the match.
Sophomore Cortney Sobrero (Las Vegas, Nev.), along with freshmen Christina Gilbert (Saratoga, Calif.) and Megan Tennant (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), tallied shots on goal.
UC Riverside established its offensive attack early by recording three goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Jenna Leonti tallied a score to give UCR a 1-0 lead at the 8:09 mark when she fired a shot past Bulldog goalkeeper Chelsea Mays (Littleton, Colo.), who was playing in just her third collegiate game and making her first career start. Mays started in place of Jeannette Paine (Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada), who was unavailable to play due to flu-like symptoms.
Kelly Hurley gave the Highlanders a 2-0 edge at the 22:56 mark, connecting off an assist from Amber Plumlee. Eight minutes later, Renee Scachetti increased UC Riverside's lead to 3-0 when she headed in a loose ball that was made possible from set-ups by Kelly Ferguson and Kacie McElrath.
The Highlanders tacked on a fourth goal in the second half, as Leonti put home a loose ball for her second score of the match. Freshman netminder Debra Marie Lambert (Modesto, Calif.) played the entire second half between the posts and made four impressive saves.
