SPOKANE, Wash. --- The Fresno State soccer team won its first game of the season at Gonzaga on Friday evening. Freshman Ariana Holmesscored the game-winning goal to secure a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga.
"We are thrilled that we got a win that we feel like we deserved and fought for, "said Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka. "More than anything we are staying true to the things we have been training and working on. That is the most important thing."
In just her fourth start in a Bulldog uniform, freshman Ariana Holmesscored her first collegiate goal off a free kick in the 24th minute of the game to put Fresno State up 1-0. The 'Dogs held the Zags to just one shot the remainder of the first half and went into halftime up one.
Katie DeVaultcame up big for the Bulldogs in the second half. In her 41st start in goal, DeVault recorded two saves off Gonzagas' 15 shots in the final 45 minutes to shutout the Zags. DeVault is now tied for third on the Fresno State all-time save list with 241 career saves.
With the Bulldogs' first shutout of the season, they pulled off a 1-0 over Gonzaga.
"Going forward, we are thrilled to have the win," added Zwaschka. "We got a lot of really neat firsts today. Our first goal, our first shutout, our first win and our first freshmen goal. Those are a lot of neat things for us to build on."
The 'Dogs (1-3) continue their three game road stand with Eastern Washington (0-4) this Sunday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. The next chance to watch the Bulldogs at home is Sept. 15 at 1 p.m., when Fresno State hosts Cal State Northridge.
