First Score For Gutierrez Gives Soccer 1-0 Win Over UNLV
Sept. 16, 2005
FRESNO, Calif.- Freshman Nicole Gutierrez scored her first career goal late in the second half to lead Fresno State in a 1-0 shutout of UNLV on Friday night in the opening round of the UNLV adidas Classic.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Bulldogs, who improved to 2-5 overall. UNLV, hosting the first of two tournaments this month, falls to 3-2-2 after suffering its first loss since a 2-0 defeat to Cal State Northridge back on Aug. 26.
Entering Friday's match, Fresno State had been outscored 10-1 during its four-game losing skid and while it did not manage much offense on Friday night, there was just enough to secure the victory. The Bulldogs registered only six shots (two of which were on goal) and leading scorer Kortney Lewis did not record a shot attempt.
Gutierrez found the net for the `Dogs at the 70:42 mark, blasting a shot into an open net from the right side. Gutierrez had appeared in all six games prior to Friday's victory, tallying three shots on the season.
Fresno State's 1-0 shutout of UNLV was the team's first shutout road victory since defeating Nevada 3-0 on Oct. 5, 2003.
Each team took five corner kicks. Fresno State was whistled for seven fouls compared to UNLV's five.
Angie Larsen was impressive in goal, preserving the shutout for her first career victory while making three saves. UNLV's Ciera Nero, who entered the game with a 0.76 GAA, takes the loss.
Fresno State wraps up play at the UNLV adidas Classic on Sunday against Sam Houston State (0-6). Kick-off is scheduled for 11 a.m.
