FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Claudia Cardenas scored her third goal in three games as the Fresno State women's soccer team defeated UC Davis, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs earned their second shutout of the year and improved to an overall record of 2-6.
"We played very well this afternoon," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We remained organized and the effort was tremendous. I specifically requested that they work their tails off and they did. We had a good game plan, they stuck to it and the result came along with it. I am very proud of the whole team effort and excited for Claudia to continue her goal scoring streak. She has the finishing touch on team effort."
Both teams entered the half time break scoreless. The Aggies had nine shots and Kaitlyn Revel had five saves in the first half. The Bulldogs recorded three shots in the first 45 minutes of play.
Five minutes into the second half the Bulldogs scored taking a 1-0 lead. Cardenas scored the go ahead goal. She found the back of the net after Callie Hancock took a shot off the goal post. Hancock recorded third assist of the season.
Cardenas leads the team in goals scored with three and points with six.
Revel ended the game with seven saves and her second shutout of the season. The junior has 22 career shutouts and is tied for second place in Fresno State history. Revel needs two more shutouts to set a new school record.
The Bulldogs recorded seven shots and had three shots on goal. Hancock had four shots and one shot on goal. She continues to lead the team in shots taken this year. Hancock also leads the team in assists with three, which is the fifth most in Fresno State history.
The Bulldogs return home to face Sacramento State on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
