FRESNO, Calif. -
Fresno State (1-7) dropped its third consecutive match to a ranked opponent and fifth overall. No. 4 California (5-1-1) scored three goals in the second half to break the match open and cruise to a 4-1 victory.
The Golden Bears were led by forward Tracy Hamm, who collected a hat trick on the day. Hamm scored the first goal of the match at the 6:40 mark and two in the second half. On three goals were unassisted.
The Bulldogs played Cal tough in the first half after a quick start by the Golden Bears. After allowing the first goal, Fresno State held Cal to just four shots in the first half. The Bulldogs evened things up at the 23:34 mark, when freshman forward Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) scored her fourth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore forward Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.)
"We did a good job of shutting down the passing lanes in the first half," said Coach Welp. "We made it really tough for them to dump it into their forwards."
In the second half, however, Cal pressed the action behind the aggressive play of Tracy Hamm, who finished with five shots with four being on goal. Dania Cabello scored the eventual winning goal at the 49:04 mark off Carly Fuller's cornerkick.
Fresno State nearly matched Cal shot for shot, taking 12 with seven being on goal. Eight different Bulldogs attempted at least one shot.
"We never stoppped competing the whole afternoon even when we were down, so I'm happy about that,"said Welp.
Fresno State returns to action Friday against Pacific at Bulldog Stadium, 7 p.m.
