Women's Soccer Blanked By Cal State Northridge 1-0
Sept. 28, 2004 FRESNO, Calif.- For the second straight game, Fresno State ran into an aggressive defense and failed to score in a 1-0 shutout loss to Cal State Northridge on Monday night at Bulldog Stadium. The only goal of the contest came in the fifth minute, as Jackie Kecskes scored off a header when she converted on an assist from Michelle McCollum following a corner kick. Cal State Northridge (6-2-1) relied on its defense for the remainder of the match, holding Fresno State (3-5-1) to just five shot attempts in what turned out to a tough, physical contest. The low-scoring affairs have been normal for the Matadors, as CSUN has allowed just seven goals in nine games overall. There were 29 total fouls in the contest, with Cal State Northridge committing 15. However, the Matadors also held a 12-5 edge in shots and 10-2 advantage in corner kicks to sustain the tempo. Kaitlyn Kelly led CSUN with three shots. Three of Fresno State's five shots were on frame, with five different players recording at least one attempt. Freshman Mercedes Splettstoesser (Hanford, Calif.), junior Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and senior Heather Young (Morgan Hill, Calif.) all tallied shots on goal. The Bulldogs have now been held scoreless for two straight games, recording just nine shot attempts over that stretch. Fresno State goalkeeper Jeannette Paine (Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada) made five saves while playing the entire match. Cal State Northridge's Karen Comstock earned the shutout with three saves. The Bulldogs open WAC play against UTEP (7-2-0) on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
