FRESNO, Calif. ---The Fresno State soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to the No. 25/16 Santa Clara Broncos Thursday night in Buck Shaw Stadium.

"Tonight we fought valiantly against a potent Santa Clara side stocked with world class players," said head Coach Brian Zwaschka. "We started a bit nervy but worked it out and settled in a bit. We didn't get many chances but we finished as well tonight as we ever have and with real class. I am of course disappointed to lose, but against all odds tonight our team showed the heart and guts that can make a team battle hardened and truly ready for anything any team wants to throw at us. Anybody, anytime, anywhere. We are now ready for conference play."

The Bulldogs jumped out to a lead in the first half with a goal from Morgan Castain in the 36th minute for her second goal of the season. Despite being out shot 17 to three, the Bulldogs entered half time with the 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Katie DeVault recorded seven saves in the first half.

In the second half the 'Dogs defense held strong until the 75th minute when the Broncos were able to tie the score at 1-1 with a goal by Lauren Matheson.

The game remained a stalemate until Santa Clara's Julie Johnston converted on a corner kick by heading the ball into the back of the net in the 86th minute to give the Broncos a 2-1.

Fresno State's Nadia Pearl responded immediately for the 'Dogs with a goal of her own, her first of the season, 16 seconds later. The score remained knotted at two for the remainder of the second half.

In the overtime period, the Broncos recorded two shots with Matheson netting her second goal of the game less than two minutes into the overtime.

DeVault topped her earlier performance this season in this match by recording a school record for saves with 13 on the evening.

The Bulldogs make their way back to Bulldog Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Fresno State takes on Air Force in its first ever Mountain West match.
