Sadowitz Scores First Goal
Sept. 30, 2009
FRESNO, Calif. - In the final non-conference game of the season for the Fresno State women's soccer team, Janna Sadowitz scored her first career goal against Saint Mary's. The Gaels scored two goals and held on to win beating the Bulldogs, 2-1. The `Dogs will head into conference play with an overall record of 2-8.
"I thought that Saint Mary's was a very good team and we played really well for most of the game," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "They were able to capitalize on two mistakes. Despite the end result, this was one of the best overall games we've put together. There were several individual standouts this game. Bradlee (DeShane) had a breakout match from the midfield and whole backline played very well. Saint Mary's has been consistently pressing and scoring a lot of goals and Kaite Lee, Kendall, Bianca and Vanessa did a great job tonight. I can't say I was disappointed with the game."
Junior Krissy Looney came off the bench and continued her momentum from last weekend's game by rocketing off the first shot of the game for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Kendall VanDine had the lone shot on goal in the first half for the `Dogs off a corner kick from Molly Nizzoli.
In her first collegiate start, goalkeeper Chrissy Smith recorded five saves in the first half of play. The Gaels recorded eight shots against the Bulldogs in the first half.
With 10 seconds left in the first half Saint Mary's put the ball in the back of the net. Daelyn Paul headed in the ball in for the Gaels and Tara Farrell earned the assist on the play.
The Bulldogs entered the half time break down, 1-0.
In the fourth minute of the second half, Sadowitz connected with Laura Dodd for the equalizing goal tying the game, 1-1. Dodd passed the ball off to Sadowitz who scored from eight yards out, the goal marks her first collegiate goal as a Bulldog.
"Janna (Sadowitz) getting the goal and hopefully this will continue motivation for more," said Zwaschka. "This is the first game she has had effort to play dangerous, she gave into what we have been teaching her and it was great to see it pay off."
The Bulldogs had two balls hit the cross bar. The first cross bar hit came when the front line was pressuring the Gael's backline and a missed clear came back at them. The second close attempt came from Callie Hancock.
Ashley Nied scored the go ahead goal for Saint Mary's giving the Gaels the lead, 2-1, in the 63rd minute of the game. Ashley Soro got the assist on the goal.
Fresno State had five shots in the second half led by Hancock with three shots. The Bulldogs recorded a total of seven shots against the Gaels.
Smith finished the game with eight saves.
"Chrissy(Smith) stepped in at goal and did a great job," said Zwaschka. "The two goals were well executed and there wasn't much she could have done about them."
