Fresno State (2-9, 1-0 WAC) started off with a clean slate and made the most of it Friday night in Houston. The Bulldogs entered the contest looking to snap their seven-match losing streak and score some goals after attempting only six shots againt Cal Poly. FS accomplished all feats, blitzing Rice (0-7-2, 0-1 WAC) for two goals and 24 shots.
The Bulldogs 24 shots were a season-high and the 11 shots on goal matched the season-high set in the 4-0 win against Southern Utah. Freshman midfielder Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) led the way firing a season-high 10 shots, including her fifth goal of the season.
Lewis' goal came in the first half to give Fresno State the 1-0 lead at halftime. Senior defender Virginia Jenkins (Lompoc, Calif.) added the insurance goal in the second half to seal the deal. It was the first goal of the season for Jenkins, who scored one goal last season and led all defenders in points a year ago.
Senior goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) and the defense collected its second shutout of the season, holding the Owls to eight shots. It was the second-lowest shots allowed by Fresno State this season. The Bulldogs held Southern Utah to only two shots earlier this year.
Fresno State returns to action Sunday at Tulsa, 10 a.m. PST.
