PORTLAND, Ore. - Fresno State soccer concluded non-conference play this weekend with a 1-0 won over Portland State. Nicole Gutierrez and Ali Sill connect for the second time this season resulting in a goal.
"It was a battle from the start and a hard fought win for us," said Coach Steve Springthorpe. "It was a great win for us on the road and in the rain. It gives us momentum going into WAC play next weekend."
The Bulldogs entered half time tied at zero.
In the 51st minute of play Nicole Gutierrez was able to put the ball away for the 21st time in her career at Fresno State. Ali Sill won the ball and played it to Gutierrez, who knocked it passed the Vikings goalie.
Sill recorded her 21st assist, which ties her in the Fresno State record books for most career assists.
"I am happy that Ali (Sill) got the assist," said Springthorpe. "The assist ties her as assist leader in Fresno State history and it is a great accomplishment."
The Bulldog defense came up big against Portland State recording their fourth shutout of the season. Kaitlyn Revel had five saves against the Vikings, while the Portland State goalie made four saves.Selena Gill made several key stops for the defense.
The Bulldogs outshot the Vikings 15-11, and both had five shots on goal. Gutierrez tied her single game high this season of nine shots.
"The captains (Gill, Sill, and Gutierrez) showed great leadership all weekend," said Springthorpe. "Sill got the assist, Gutierrez got the key goal, and Gill sweeping up on defense. The captains had a major impact on the games this weekend."
Fresno State saw plenty of action in the rain, as it rained constantly throughout both matches.
The Bulldogs head into WAC play next week 4-7-1. The 'Dogs start conference play on the road facing San Jose State at 3 p.m.
