Bulldogs Earn Win on the Road

FRESNO, Calif. - Bulldog soccer earned a 1-0 win over San Jose State in double overtime Friday night. Nicole Gutierrez netted her 22nd career goal in the opening game of conference play.
"San Jose State played a hard game and they played with a lot of passion," said coach Steve Springthorpe. "I'm happy we were able to get a win on the road and win our first WAC match."
Both teams had opportunities to score and entered halftime scoreless.
The Bulldogs continued to put pressure on the Spartan defense. Gutierrez had several close attempts on goal. She ended the game with eight shots.
At the end of regulation the score was tied at zero. It was not until the final seconds of the second overtime that Gutierrez was able to score.
Revel had a long drop kick with 14 seconds left on the clock. Ali Sill flicked the ball on passed the Spartan defenders. Gutierrez won the ball and pushed it passed the Spartan goalie, who was coming off her line.
The goal is the third time Sill and Gutierrez have connected for a goal. Sill is the all-time career assist leader with 22. Gutierrez leads the Bulldogs with five goals this season and Sill leads with four assists. Revel also earned an assist on the play.
"Kaitlyn (Revel) had a great game for us and played really well," said Springthorpe.
Kaitlyn Revel came up with seven saves against the Spartans. This shutout marks Revel and the Bulldog defenses fifth shutout this year.
"In the end WAC play is about results and we did what we needed to do at the end of the game to earn a win," said Springthorpe. "I'm happy with the goal and the shutout, but now it is time to focus on Hawaii."
