2008 Soccer Schedule Announced
May 27, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - Since taking over the women's soccer program, Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe has built a program that expects to compete for a WAC championship on a yearly basis. With the upcoming 2008 season just months away Springthorpe has put together a schedule that will help prepare his team for a run at the WAC title.
This year the Bulldog coach has scheduled games with four teams that went to last year's NCAA tournament in the University of Denver (Sept. 19 @ Denver), Colorado (Sept. 21 @ Denver), Sacramento State (Sept. 28) and fellow-conference member Hawai'I (Oct. 12).
"I am looking forward to our team playing the schedule we have put together for 2008," Springthorpe said. "The nonconference schedule is very competitive and will prepare us for what I hope will be a run for the conference championship the last month of the season. I am happy that we will be having 11 home games this year (one exhibition and 10 regular season games). This will give our fans and the community many opportunities to come out and watch the team."
The Bulldogs will also compete at home against UC Davis (Aug. 24), Cal Poly (Aug. 31), Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 5), Florida International (Sept. 11), Seattle University (Sept. 26), Boise State (Oct. 24), Idaho (Oct. 26) and Nevada (Nov. 2). Also on the schedule for August 16 is an exhibition game against Fresno Pacific.
Fresno State will hit the road for games at San Francisco (Aug. 22), Cal-State Bakersfield (Aug. 29), Oregon State (Oct. 3), Portland State (Oct. 5), San Jose State (Oct. 10), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 17) and Utah State (Oct. 19).
This year's WAC tournament will be held at the University of Nevada November 6-9.
Last year Fresno State placed second in the WAC and at the conference tournament. Springthorpe returns a solid core of returning players in All-WAC performers Nicole Gutierrez, Kaity Revel, Ali Sill and Selena Gill.
