FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State soccer team concluded its first week of fall camp on Tuesday Aug. 13 and is set to host UC Irvine for a preseason exhibition game on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Soccer/Lacrosse field.
In preparation for their second season in the Mountain West, the Bulldogs have been having up to three practice sessions a day since the beginning of camp last Wednesday. Head Coach Brian Zwaschka believes that the team is in a positive place as they head into their second week of fall camp.
"We are off to a good start, "said Zwaschka. "It's going to be a continued evaluation process."
"We have been training a lot, working on a lot of different things and making sure we are getting all of our details right, "said senior Lauren Lindstrom. " We have been focusing on the little things so that everything will come together when the season starts."
The 'Dogs will have their first opportunity to play against an opponent outside of team scrimmages this Friday when they host UC Irvine for an exhibition game in preparation for its opener.
"It makes sense for us to schedule a really difficult top team, "said Zwaschka."We want to put ourselves in the situation where we are really going to have to compete to earn things. It's awesome that they are coming up here to get some tough competition before games really count."
UC Irvine posted a 9-8-4 record in 2012 under head coach Scott Juniper. The Anteaters return six starters and 17 letterwinners, along with the addition of 11 newcomers. Leading the Anteaters is senior Natalie Ledezma who was All-West Region and First-Team All-Big West in 2011 and 2012. Fresno State trails UCI 1-6 all-time with two of the six losses coming at home. The last time the two teams faced in 2010, UC Irvine secured a 2-0 victory.
Fresno State concludes its fall camp on Aug. 21 and then kicks off its season with two road games starting with UC Santa Barbara on Aug. 23, followed by Cal State Fullerton on the 25th.
The 'Dogs then return to Bulldog Stadium for their home opener on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. The Fresno State Soccer team is attempting to break the national attendance record for a women's soccer game. Join the team in making history as they take on Santa Clara for Project 9000!
