FRESNO, Calif.- At the conclusion of its second game of the 2014 season, the Fresno State soccer team came up short in its face off against Gonzaga at Bulldog Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The `Dogs are now 1-1 in regular season.
The `Dogs had a slow start on this midday game, allowing two goals in the first half by the Gonzaga Bulldogs. One of those was an own goal made by Fresno State. The Zags defense managed to keep the Bulldogs from reaching the back of the net on any of the five goal shot attempts.
Gonzaga concluded with three points on the board but goal keeper Alyssa Wilson minimized the final score with five saves on the total of 14 shots made by the Zags.
"It was a team effort," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We obviously used a fair amount of players and part of that was because of the heat maybe, but mostly because we want to rotate players in. We have such a young squad that we're still trying to find an identity for this team and we have a lot of players that are contributing a lot of interesting things."
Though the `Dogs fell short, this game against Gonzaga allowed multiple players to gain experience on the field as well as gain familiarity with one another and playing in Bulldog Stadium.
"We know we have to be patient and particularly with such a young group with the idea that people are learning," Zwaschka said. "People learned a lot in today's game, people learned a lot in Friday's game and we'll get better and better, we just have to be patient."
The `Dogs hit the road this week for two games in Iowa then will be visiting UC Irvine and Santa Clara the following week before returning home to face Cal State Fullerton on Friday Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
