Castain and Holmes Earn MW Honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Fresno State senior Morgan Castain was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, and Fresno State freshman Ariana Holmes was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. This is the second career MW weekly award for Castain, and the first for Holmes.

Castain and Holmes had a foot on every scoring play, combining for three goals and three assists as the 'Dogs went 2-0 last weekend with wins over Gonzaga (1-0) and Eastern Washington (3-2 OT).

Holmes led the Bulldogs to their first win and shutout of the season against Gonzaga in her fifth straight start in a Fresno State uniform. The freshman defender scored the game-winning goal against Gonzaga off a free kick in the 24th minute to pick up 1-0 victory. Holmes went on to assist on two goals against Eastern Washington, including setting up Castain for the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to secure the 3-2 victory.

Castain totaled five points over the weekend (2 goals, 1 assist). The senior midfielder scored her first goal of the weekend against Eastern Washington in the 13th minute of play to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Castain assisted on the 'Dogs second goal of the game to tie it up at 2-2 in the 76th minute and then scored the game-winning goal in overtime to get the 3-2 win against Eastern Washington. The Castro Valley, Calif., native currently leads the Bulldogs with two goals, five points and 10 shots this season.

After getting a pair of weekend wins, the 'Dogs (2-3) continue their three game road stand at UC Riverside (2-3-1) this Friday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. Fresno State then returns home on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m., to host Cal State Northridge (1-5) in Bulldog Stadium.
