Facing the Big West
The Fresno State Soccer team is set to play two Big West opponents this weekend, starting with UC Riverside (2-3-1) this Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the UC Riverside Soccer Field. The 'Dogs (2-3) then return home to Bulldog Stadium to face Cal State Northridge (1-5) on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
This will be the seventh time that the Bulldogs have played UC Riverside. The Highlanders lead the series 0-4-2, the last time the two teams faced each other the game ended in a 2-2 draw in double overtime.
The Bulldogs lead Cal State Northridge with a 4-3-1 series record. Fresno State has won the last two home matches over the Matadors 1-0. Their last visit to Bulldog Stadium came on on Aug. 27, 2006.
About the Highlanders (2-3-1)
UC Riverside split two road games last weekend with a loss 0-2 loss to UTEP and a 2-1 win over New Mexico State. The Highlanders also have a 2-1 victory over Mountain West foe San Jose State this season. Freshmen midfielder Tatum Lockett leads UC Riverside with two goals off of five shots.
About the Matadors (1-5)
Cal State Northridge picked up its first win of the season this past weekend over Houston in overtime play. Brittanie Sakajian scored the golden goal for the Matadors in the sixth minute of overtime play to secure a 2-1 victory. The Matadors went on to split the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 8. Cal State Northridge also has losses to Arizona State (2-0), UCLA (3-0), USC (4-1) and San Diego (3-1). Freshman forward, Breanna McCallum leads the Matadors with two goals and one assist this season.
Castain and Holmes Sweep MW Weekly Honors
Senior Morgan Castain was named Mountain West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Ariana Holmes earned MW Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Sept. 3 through Sept. 8. It is the second-career MW weekly accolade for Castain, and first for Holmes. Castain and Holmes had a foot on every scoring play, combining for three goals and three assists as the 'Dogs went 2-0 with wins over Gonzaga (1-0) and Eastern Washington (3-2 OT). Holmes scored the game-winning goal against Gonzaga off a free kick in the 24th minute to pick up 1-0 victory. Holmes went on to assist on two goals against Eastern Washington, including setting up Castain for the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to secure the 3-2 victory. Castain totalled five points over the weekend (2 goals, 1 assist).
DeVault Breaks into the Top Three
After picking up seven saves last weekend, DeVault now sits solely in the third spot on the Fresno State all-time saves list with 246 career saves. DeVault has a total of 18 saves so far this season and is now just 44 saves shy of Kaitlyn Revel (2007-2010), who sits second all-time record with 290 saves.
Castain Leads the 'Dogs
After five games senior Morgan Castain leads the Bulldogs with two goals, one assists, five points and 10 shots. Castain is tied at fourth with most goals in the Mountain West. Jacyee Bingham trails Castain with seven shots this season, while Megan Mossman has six shots with two being on goal.
Freshmen Making an Impact
Freshmen Alyssa Holsworth and Holmes have started in all five matches of the 2013 season and Amanda Nunes has started in four games. Holmes scored her first collegiate goal against Gonzaga for the win and had two assists in the victory over Eastern Washington on Sept. 8. Holsworth and Nunes have combined for five shots so far this season.
Wilson Records First Minutes
Redshirt freshman Alyssa Wilson recorded her first minutes in a Bulldog uniform against No. 23 Santa Clara on Aug. 31. Wilson started the second half of the game and recorded eight saves off of 15 second half shots to send the game into overtime.
On Aug. 31, 4,328 fans showed up to cheer on the Bulldogs as they took on Santa Clara! In an attempt to break the national attendance record for a regular season women's soccer game the Redwave helped break the attendance record for a Fresno State women's soccer game!
Lindstrom Picks up Preseason Honors
Senior Lauren Lindstrom was named to the Mountain West women's soccer 2013 preseason all-conference second team that was released by College Sports Madness. A returning starter for the Bulldogs, Lindstrom enters her final year at the helm of the Fresno State defense that has totaled 23 shutouts in the past three seasons. She played every minute in 16 games in 2012, finishing the year with one goal and two assists. A major contributor since her freshmen season, Lindstrom has played in 67 games during her collegiate career, starting in all but two.
The Bulldogs have six returning seniors leading them into their 2013 season. Tara Boynton, Morgan Castain, Kayla Kret, Lauren Lindstrom, Megan Mossman, and Shonice Myers look to combined their experience on the field to lead the 'Dogs to a successful year.
DeVault Returns in Goal
Junior Katie DeVault returns after a standout sophomore season. DeVault appeared in and started all 20 games in goal and played nearly 1900 minutes in 2012. She was ranked (T-15th) nationally in saves and led the Mountain West in saves (122) and saves per game (6.1). DeVault also set new school record for saves in a single match with 13 against then No. 24 Santa Clara. DeVault will try to build off the success of last season to be an anchor for the Bulldogs' defense in goal.
The 'Dogs add four new faces to the roster this season. Amanda Nunes, Alyssa Holsworth, Angie Weiner, and Ariana Holmes all join the as freshmen in 2013. Their experience and fresh talent look to add some depth to the Fresno State roster this year.
'Dogs Picked to Finish Sixth
The Fresno State soccer team was chosen to finish sixth (52 points) in the Mountain West 2013 preseason poll. Defending MW champion San Diego State was the favorite to win the 2013 MW regular-season title with a total of nine first-place votes and 99 total points. New Mexico was second with 86 points and one first-place vote. UNLV and MW newcomer Utah State tied for third with 77 points apiece, with the Rebels garnering one first-place vote Fresno State finished its first regular season in the MW tied for fifth with Nevada last year. The 2012 Bulldog squad made it to the Mountain West Tournament as a No. 5 seed, ending their season with a 1-0 loss to UNLV in the first-round.
The Mountain West
Fresno State enters its second season in the Mountain West Conference after finishing tied for fifth in 2012. The new season brings the addition of three new schools to Mountain West soccer. San Jose State, Utah State and Colorado State are set to join the conference to bring the total to 11 teams in 2013. San Jose State and Utah State are joining from the Western Athletic Conference, while Colorado State enters the MW for its inaugural soccer season.
