FRESNO, Calif. ---The Fresno State soccer team makes its third road trip of the season this weekend as the Bulldogs travel to Austin to face Texas and Stillwater to play Oklahoma State. The 'Dogs will take on the Longhorns on Friday night at 6 p.m. PT and the No. 7/9 Cowgirls on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
The Red Wave can catch the Bulldogs in action Friday night on television as Texas will air the match on the Longhorn Network. The Longhorn Network can be found on AT&T U-Verse Ch. 609/1609 (HD) or at http://espn.go.com/longhornnetwork/ where fans can log in if you have Verizon FiOS.
'Dogs Set for Third Road Trip
The Fresno State soccer team hits the road again this week for the third road trip of the season. The 'Dogs will face a pair of Big 12 opponents for the first time this season. The Bulldogs have played five of seven games away from home.
Senior Strikes Again
Senior Callie Hancock added to her scoring tally against UC Riverside by scoring just before halftime to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. Hancock has scored in back-to-back games and will look to extend her streak. Hancock leads Fresno State in scoring with four goals and points (8) this season.
Best of the West
About the Longhorns (2-6-0)
Sophomore Katie DeVault returned this year for the 'Dogs between the pipes. After four weeks of action, she leads the Mountain West in saves per game (6.43) and is second in saves (45) one behind Nevada's Dana Moreno. DeVault recorded a monstrous 24 saves during week two when she set the school record for single game saves (12) in back-to-back games. Forward Callie Hancock also tops the conference leaderboard with 24 shots and 3.43 shots per game this season.
The 'Dogs will face a Longhorn team that has lost four in a row and is hungry for a win at home. Texas head coach Angela Kelly is in her first year leading the Longhorns who only have two non-conference games remaining. The Longhorns lead the Big 12 with 60 starts from their freshmen and sophomores. Senior Kristin Cummins leads Texas on offense with three goals and two assists this season. Sophomore Ava Vogel has recorded 30 saves and one shutout for the Longhorns.
About the Cowgirls (8-1-0)
The 'Dogs will drive into Stillwater looking for an upset against the seventh-best team in the country. OSU is coming off a 4-0 victory over Rice after suffering its only loss of the season to in-state rival Oklahoma. The Cowgirls are 5-0 at home and are outscoring their opponents 20-7. Head coach Colin Carmichael is in his 17th season in Stillwater and return after a 2011 campaign that included a second consecutive Elite Eight appearance, fourth consecutive Big 12 championship, No. 5 final ranking, 21-game unbeaten streak and school record 22 wins. The Cowgirls are led by the 2011 NCAA leader in goals against average and shutouts in senior Adrianna Franch.
Against the Competition
Fresno State has never played Texas nor Oklahoma State. The 'Dogs have a 1-3 record against Big 12 opponents.
Gonzalez Gets Goal
Senior midfielder Vanessa Gonzalez recorded her first goal of the season and third career goal at a critical point in the 'Dogs double overtime draw with UC Riverside. It took Gonzalez all of 28 seconds to respond for the Bulldogs after the Highlanders took a 2-1 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Myers Dishing Out Assists
Through crisp passing and great placement, junior Shonice Myers dished out her second assist of the season against UC Riverside. She is tied for eighth in the Mountain West with two assists and .29 assists per game.
