'Dogs Home for a Pair of MW Matches
After winning both home matches last weekend, the Bulldogs (5-7-1, 2-2 MW) conclude their four-game home stand with two Mountain West games this weekend in Bulldog Stadium. The 'Dogs first take on Utah State (6-4-2, 2-1) on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., for Salute to Service night. The Bulldogs then play Boise State (7-4-2, 2-1) on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. Sunday is Bring a Kid to the Game Day! There will be a free carnival setup outside of the stadium with tons of activities for the kids--remember to come early for bounce houses, a chance to meet TimeOut, and much more!
Head-to-Head with Utah State and Boise State
Fresno State holds a 6-3-3 record over Utah State. The last time the two teams met was in 2011 when the Aggies defeated the Bulldogs, 1-0, in the WAC Tournament championship match. The Bulldogs lead Boise State with a 6-5-2 series record. Fresno State has won 3-of-5 home games against the Broncos, though the last time the two teams faced Boise State found a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs in double overtime in 2012.
About the Aggies (6-4-2, 2-1 MW)
Utah State broke its four-game goalless streak on Sept. 29, with a 2-1 road win over UNLV. The Aggies are coming off a 1-0 home victory over Wyoming. Senior forward Jennifer Flynn leads the Aggies with three goals and seven points this season.
About the Broncos (7-4-2, 2-1 MW)
Boise State heads into the weekend coming off a two-game winning streak, with victories over Nevada and Wyoming. The Broncos are set to play San Jose State at home on Oct. 11, before traveling to play the Bulldogs on Sunday. Sophomore midfielder Brooke Heidemann leads Boise State with six goals in 2013.
Castain and DeVault Earn MW Weekly Honors
For the second time this season, Fresno State swept the MW Player of the Week awards. Senior Morgan Castain was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the week, and junior Katie DeVault was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the week on Oct. 7. This is the third career MW weekly award for Castain, and the second for DeVault. Castain was also named Fresno State Sysco Student-Athlete of the Week and named MW Player of the week by College Sports Madness for her outstanding performance. Castain totalled three goals last weekend including the game-winning goal in the 99th minute of overtime to get a 1-0 victory over UNLV on Oct. 6. DeVault only allowed one goal while recording 11 saves over the weekend, and helped the Bulldogs to their third shutout of the season.
Castain Leads the 'Dogs
Castain had two huge games for the Bulldogs last weekend- with three goals she led Fresno State to their first conference victories of the season. After 13 games the senior midfielder leads the Bulldogs with eight goals, one assists, 17 points and 38 shots. Castain is also with San Diego State's Hannah Keana tied at first with most goals in the Mountain West. Lauren Lindstrom trail Castain with 20 shots and eight shots on goal.
DeVault in the Record Books
After 11 saves last weekend DeVault is now tied for second on the Fresno State all-time saves list with 290 career saves. The junior goalkeeper has a total of 62 saves so far this season. DeVault also recorded her 12th career shutout against UC Riverside on Sept. 13 and now sits just one shutout off of the fourth all-time Fresno State record of 13 shutouts
Castain and Holmes Sweep MW Weekly Honors
Senior Morgan Castain was named Mountain West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Ariana Holmes earned MW Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played Sept. 3 through Sept. 8. It is the second-career MW weekly accolade for Castain, and first for Holmes. Castain and Holmes had a foot on every scoring play, combining for three goals and three assists as the 'Dogs went 2-0 with wins over Gonzaga (1-0) and Eastern Washington (3-2 OT). Holmes scored the game-winning goal against Gonzaga off a free kick in the 24th minute to pick up 1-0 victory. Holmes went on to assist on two goals against Eastern Washington, including setting up Castain for the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to secure the 3-2 victory. Castain totalled five points over the weekend (2 goals, 1 assist).
On Aug. 31, 4,328 fans showed up to cheer on the Bulldogs as they took on Santa Clara! In an attempt to break the national attendance record for a regular season women's soccer game the Redwave helped break the attendance record for a Fresno State women's soccer game!
Lindstrom Picks up Preseason Honors
Senior Lauren Lindstrom was named to the Mountain West women's soccer 2013 preseason all-conference second team that was released by College Sports Madness. A returning starter for the Bulldogs, Lindstrom enters her final year at the helm of the Fresno State defense that has totaled 23 shutouts in the past three seasons. She played every minute in 16 games in 2012, finishing the year with one goal and two assists. A major contributor since her freshmen season, Lindstrom has played in 67 games during her collegiate career, starting in all but two.
The Bulldogs have six returning seniors leading them into their 2013 season. Tara Boynton, Morgan Castain, Kayla Kret, Lauren Lindstrom, Megan Mossman, and Shonice Myers look to combined their experience on the field to lead the 'Dogs to a successful year.
DeVault Returns in Goal
Junior Katie DeVault returns after a standout sophomore season. DeVault appeared in and started all 20 games in goal and played nearly 1900 minutes in 2012. She was ranked (T-15th) nationally in saves and led the Mountain West in saves (122) and saves per game (6.1). DeVault also set new school record for saves in a single match with 13 against then No. 24 Santa Clara. DeVault will try to build off the success of last season to be an anchor for the Bulldogs' defense in goal.
The 'Dogs add four new faces to the roster this season. Amanda Nunes, Alyssa Holsworth, Angie Weiner, and Ariana Holmes all join the as freshmen in 2013. Their experience and fresh talent look to add some depth to the Fresno State roster this year.
'Dogs Picked to Finish Sixth
The Fresno State soccer team was chosen to finish sixth (52 points) in the Mountain West 2013 preseason poll. Defending MW champion San Diego State was the favorite to win the 2013 MW regular-season title with a total of nine first-place votes and 99 total points. New Mexico was second with 86 points and one first-place vote. UNLV and MW newcomer Utah State tied for third with 77 points apiece, with the Rebels garnering one first-place vote Fresno State finished its first regular season in the MW tied for fifth with Nevada last year. The 2012 Bulldog squad made it to the Mountain West Tournament as a No. 5 seed, ending their season with a 1-0 loss to UNLV in the first-round.
The Mountain West
Fresno State enters its second season in the Mountain West Conference after finishing tied for fifth in 2012. The new season brings the addition of three new schools to Mountain West soccer. San Jose State, Utah State and Colorado State are set to join the conference to bring the total to 11 teams in 2013. San Jose State and Utah State are joining from the Western Athletic Conference, while Colorado State enters the MW for its inaugural soccer season.
