Soccer Back in Bulldog Stadium for Pair of MW Games

FRESNO, Calif. ---The Fresno State soccer team is set for a critical weekend in Mountain West play in Bulldog Stadium as the 'Dogs take on two-time defending Mountain West Champion New Mexico on Friday at 7 p.m. and current nationally-ranked San Diego State Sunday at 1 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium. All three teams are currently tied for the conference lead as each team sits at 2-0 in Mountain West play. The Red Wave is encouraged to come out and support the 'Dogs with important conference implications on the line. Sunday's matchup with in-state rival SDSU will serve as Bring a Kid to the Game Day. An hour before kick-off (12 p.m.), a carnival atmosphere will be set up in Bulldog Stadium including a bounce house, sign making, and other carnival games. The SDSU game will also serve as the Fresno State scarf giveaway where the first 200 fans will receive a free Fresno State scarf. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two Mountain West Players of the Week The Fresno State soccer team netted its first two Mountain West Players of the Week after defeating Wyoming 2-0 on the road. Junior Morgan Castain was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for both Fresno State goals on her only two shot attempts, netting a goal in each half. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie DeVault was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week after she recorded her second solo shutout of the season during which she had nine saves. DeVault has pushed her streak of shutout minutes to 173:40 over the last two games. Hello Mountain West! Fresno State entered the 2012 season as a new member of the Mountain West Conference and kicked off in its first-ever Mountain West game against Air Force on Sept. 30. The 'Dogs defeated the Falcons 3-0. Under head coach Brian Zwaschka, the Bulldogs have won three out of four conference openers. The 'Dogs then went on the road for the first time in Mountain West play, shutting out Wyoming 2-0. 'Dogs Picked Third The Bulldogs are picked to finish third in the Mountain West by a voting panel of the eight Mountain West head women's soccer coaches. Defending conference champion New Mexico is the favorite heading into the season with five first place votes followed by San Diego State who recieved two first place votes. Fresno State received the final first place vote. Best of the West Sophomore Katie DeVault returned this year for the 'Dogs between the pipes. After eight weeks of action, she leads the Mountain West in saves (93) and saves per game (6.64). The closest competitor in the Moun¬tain West is Dana Moreno who has 61 saves. DeVault ranks in the top ten nationally holding down the eighth spot with the 93 saves. DeVault has led the 'Dogs with back to back shutouts and three as a team this season.
Castain Can Capitalize Morgan Castain scored the Bulldogs' two goals in the opening road MW game against Wyoming for her third and fourth goals of the season. Castain is the second leading scorer for the 'Dogs and ranks second in points with four goals and one assist. Senior Leads on Offense Forward Callie Hancock added to her season points total in Week 8 with an assist to Morgan Castain in the 2-0 win over Wyoming. Hancock joins teammate Katie DeVault at the top of the conference leaderboard with 48 shots and 3.43 shots per game. She also sits third in goals (7) and goals per game (.50).
