TEMPE, Ariz. - The Fresno State softball team opened the 2006 season with a disappointing 5-4 loss to CS Fullerton, Friday in Tempe, Ariz. On the opening day of the Kijikawa Classic, the Bulldogs led early and then attempted to rally in the seventh, only to fall short by a run.
Fresno State jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the first three innings. Both runs were scored by Jenna Cervantez, who was driven in by Nicole Willis on both occasions. Willis was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a walk.
Fullerton scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at two. The Titans then exploded for three runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
But the Bulldogs rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, one on senior shortstop Christina Clark's solo home run. But it was not enough as Fullerton's Candice Baker stuck out sophomore infield Kristin Sylvester to finish the game.
Freshman right hander Robin Mackin made her Fresno State debut throwing six innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits, walking four and striking out seven.
