FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State softball concluded opening weekend with a 3-2 win over Sacramento State. The Bulldogs begin the 2013 campaign with a 4-1 record.
The final game of the Fresno State Kick-Off was a close game for the Bulldogs, who headed into sixth inning tied. The Bulldogs aggressive offense and smart base running came up huge late in the game. Sophomore Maria Sio scored the game-winning run in the bottom half of the sixth on a throwing error.
"We were just playing Bulldog softball," said head coach Trisha Ford. "We are going to be aggressive at the plate and on the bases. We are going to push and keep pushing. We wanted to make their defense make a decision and luckily it worked out for us."
The Bulldogs collected seven hits against the Hornets. Moss, Stesha Brazil and Paige Gum hit a game-high two hits each. Moss leads the team with a .400 batting average, while Brazil is hitting .375 and Gumz .357 after five games.
"We are going to stay aggressive," Ford said of the `Dogs offense. "There are going to be times it pays off and others when it doesn't. We've got good team speed, so we will put pressure on the defense."
Senior Diane Runge drove in the first run of the game for the `Dogs with a single through the left side. Brazil almost added another run for the Bulldogs, but the Hornets second baseman made a great juggling catch on the edge of the infield to end the inning.
In the top of the third inning, Sacramento State carried the momentum over from the huge defense play and tied the game 1-1 with a solo home run.
The Bulldogs regained the lead in the fourth inning. Moss scored on a wild pitch giving the `Dogs a 3-2 lead. Sacramento State answered in the next half inning tying the game 3-3 after scoring a run on a single to shallow right field.
The momentum shifted back to Fresno State in sixth inning as the `Dogs defense turned a double play to end the bottom half of the inning. The Bulldogs capitalized on a Sacramento State throwing error and Sio scored a run taking a 3-2 lead.Moss stole second base and the Hornets catcher threw to second in attempt to throw out the 'Dogs center fielder. Instead Sacramento State committed the error, which allowed Sio to score.
Compton made her fourth start of the weekend and recorded her third complete game. The freshman struck out one Hornet batter and threw five scoreless innings. Compton improves to 3-1 on the season and has an ERA of 1.75.
"She (Jillian Compton) took this team on her shoulders this weekend," said Ford of Compton's performance in the circle. "The whole team was behind her and played good defense behind her. She threw her heart out."
