TEMPE, Ariz. - The Fresno State softball team was defeated by Northwestern 5-0 in its second game of day two at the Kijakawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Bulldogs fell to 1-3, while Northwestern improved to 2-1.
The first four innings featured a good pitchers duel as both teams were held scoreless until Northwestern got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Northwestern catcher Kristen Amegin drove Laura Ferreira's pitch over the right field fence to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats scored one run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory.
Ferreira was solid through four innings, keeping the Wildcats off balance and working the outside corner. In the fourth, junior outfielder Shannon Garvin made an outstanding catch in right center field to take away a potential double from Northwestern. Garvin also robbed Northwestern's Garland Cooper of a double just before Amegin's homer. Ferreira allowed four runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out three in five and two-thirds innings.
Northwestern starter Courtnay Foster was outstanding, limiting the Bulldogs to only one hit in seven shutout innings. Freshman infielder Haley Perkins notched Fresno State's only hit.
Fresno State returns to action tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 12, at 11:30 a.m. when it faces Cal State Northridge in the final day of the Kijakawa Classic.
