FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 17 Fresno State softball team opened its home season victoriously with a 2-0 victory over Pacific.
Improving to 24-5 in home openers and 17-4 under 21st-year head coach Margie Wright, the Bulldogs posted their first shutout victory behind a three-hitter from freshman right-hander Robin Mackin and a 3-for-3 performance from the plate by senior shortstop Christina Clark.
The 'Dogs scored both of their runs in the first. With one out second baseman Jenna Cervantez singled to center field before Clark doubled down the left field line to score Cervantez. Clark then advanced to third on a fly out by catcher Nichole Willis. With two outs, Mackin reached safely on an error by Tiger third baseman Crystal Presson, which allowed Clark to score.
Retiring 10 or more batters in her third consecutive start, Mackin allowed just three infield hits while walking none and striking out 11.
Notching her third multiple hit game of the season, Clark also collected singles in the third and fifth inning to account for half of the team's hits.
Pacific, which fell to 2-1 on the season, was led by centerfielder Gina Carbonatto as she picked up two of the team's three hits.
Tiger pitcher Kristen Allen took the loss to go to 0-1 on the season. She allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
