SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Fresno State softball lost an extra-inning game against San Diego 8-7 in the final game of the Gaucho Classic I hosted by UC Santa Barbara. The Bulldogs have an overall mark of 6-6 in 2013.

The Bulldogs rallied in the seventh inning to the tie game and send it in to extra innings. Sophomore Maria Sio picked the perfect time to launch her first career home run. The shortstop crushed a two-run homer to left field to even the score 7-7, before the Toreros scored the winning run in the ninth inning.

"It wasn't one run that killed us, but the process throughout the game," said head coach Trisha Ford. "We need to clean up the little things. We made some great plays and had some good at-bats. We need to keep learning from our mistakes."

The Bulldogs totaled 12 hits, while the Toreros had 14. Vonnie Martin, Brooke Ortiz, Paige Gumz and Diane Runge all recorded two hits in the final game of the weekend.

Martin drove in the first two runs as the `Dogs took a 2-0 lead over San Diego with a single to right field. The junior ended the day 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and two RBI. The Toreros answered in the bottom of the first inning scoring one run and cutting the Bulldogs lead to 2-1.

In the second inning, Brenna Moss hit a two RBI single up the middle increasing the `Dogs lead to 4-1 over San Diego. Moss leads the team with eight RBI on the year and is hitting .341 after 12 games.

The Bulldog infield halted San Diego's comeback attempt in the bottom of the third inning by turning a 6-4-3 double play, which ended the inning. Fresno State has turned seven double plays in 2013.

San Diego got one run across in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bulldogs led 4-2.

Hannah Harris limited the Toreros to three runs, one of which was earned, in her fifth start of the season. The freshman threw 4.1 innings and has a total of 20.1 innings pitched in five appearances.

The Toreros took a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning after clearing the bases with a grand slam to left field. Kapri Angotti pinch hit to lead off the sixth inning and singled up the middle. Runge followed with a single to third base for her second hit of the game.

Michelle Solomon hit a double to lead off the top of the seventh inning, which kept her hitting streak alive at three games. Gumz drove in Solomon with an RBI single bringing Sio up to bat. The sophomore tied the game 7-7 after launching a two-run home run to left field.

Taylor Langdon took over in the circle late in the game shutting down the Toreros offense in the seventh and eight innings. The freshman has a 1-1 record and an ERA 1.0 in 14 innings of relief work.

Moss made her second diving catch of the day in the outfield keeping the Torero runners in place. The Bulldogs remained tied heading into the ninth inning. San Diego won 8-7 with a walk-off double to left field in the ninth inning.
