LOS ANGELES - The Fresno State softball team lost to UCLA 2-0 Saturday at Easton Stadium in Westwood, Calif. In a close pitchers duel, the Bulldogs and Bruins battled in the 46th meeting between the two programs. UCLA's Lisa Dodd was awarded the win, while Fresno State's Robin Mackin got the loss. Fresno State fell to 4-4 on the season, while UCLA improved to 6-1.

UCLA got on the board first when it scored two runs in the bottom of the second. Designated player Emily Zaplatosch singled to center to begin the inning. She then advanced to second on shortstop Jodie Legaspi's sacrifice bunt. Zaplatosch then moved to third on a wild pitch before pitcher Lisa Dodd homered to left center to give the Bruins an early lead.

In the third, the Bruins threatened again, loading the bases with two outs. But Mackin struck out UCLA's Ashley Herrera, stranding the runners to get out of the jam.

Junior outfielder Shannon Garvin lined a double to deep right field to lead off the fifth. However, a ground out and two Bulldog strikeouts left Garvin stranded at second. The Bulldogs left six runners on, while the Bruins failed to plate eight runners.

In six innings of work, Mackin allowed two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out eight. Mackin did not allow a hit in the last three and a third innings, retiring 10 of the last 12 batters, the only two runners reaching on Bulldog errors.

The Bulldogs and Bruins will complete their two-game series Sunday, Feb. 19, at 1 p.m. at Easton Stadium.
